Club Mixed Foursomes

Notices have been posted in the Pro Shop and clubhouse today (12 August) inviting entries from members of the Gents section to the Club Mixed Foursomes competition. This event was postponed from June and will now take place on Sunday 17 October starting at 1pm.

The RMGC Council hopes that this will be an enjoyable, end of season event bringing members of the Ladies and Gents sections together for a golfing and social occasion. There will be a meal in the dining-room after the competition and participants will be required to contribute £5 towards the cost of this.

Jacket and tie are required for the meal.

The existing trophy for this competition is very small and it would not be appropriate to add more bases to it. A new trophy is therefore being made for presentation to the annual winners of this event. So if you wish to be one of the first winners of this new trophy, get your entry in now!

Slow Play

The Council remains concerned at the increase in recent years in the time taken to complete a round of golf at this course in RMGC competitions. Many members can remember when a Medal round took no more than 3 hours 15 minutes to complete. 4 hours has now become the norm for a 3-ball and the Council is determined that this must be reduced to a maximum of 3 hours and 30 minutes.

This golf course has gained a bad reputation in golfing circles for slow play and it is known to be a factor in deterring people from joining and in members leaving to go elsewhere. The membership needs to recognise this and take responsibility, individually and collectively, for turning this situation around.

The Council will be monitoring the position more proactively and will not hesitate to take action against offenders. The Council will give full support to the staff in the Professional’s shop in keeping play running to time even if this results in members being disqualified from playing in a competition (and not allowed on the course) for being late for their starting time.

Advice and guidance to members have been posted on the notice-boards in the past but the following guidelines and recommendations issued by the R and A should be observed by ALL members on a continuing basis in all play.

  • Be aware of your position with regard to the group in front.
  • Do not concern yourself with the group behind; the fact that you are not holding them up is irrelevant as it is your group’s responsibility to keep up with the group in front.
  • If you feel that your group is falling behind, advise the other players in your group.
  • If your group is behind, try to catch up quickly.
  • If you lose a clear hole and you are delaying the group behind, invite the group behind to play through.
  • Do not wait until it is your turn to play before calculating your yardage and selecting your club.
  • Look at your own line of putt while the other players in the group look at theirs (within the bounds of normal etiquette).
  • In summary, prepare yourself for playing your next shot as soon as possible when it becomes your turn.
  • At the green, place your bags/trolleys/buggy so as to enable you to move swiftly off the green to the next tee. (That usually means not leaving clubs at the front of greens.)
  • Move off the green as soon as all players in your group have holed out. Mark score cards at the next tee while you wait for others in your group to drive.
  • If you think your ball may be lost or out of bounds, immediately play a provisional ball, after informing your fellow competitors. Play it from as near as possible to the spot from which the original ball was last played.
  • If you keep up with the group in front. You cannot be accused of slow play.

Finally, we play golf for fun, not our livelihood, even when we are playing in a competition. However, playing golf is not the same as strolling along a prom; nor is a golf course a place for chatter with players in other groups. KEEP UP A GOOD PACE WHEN WALKING BETWEEN SHOTS AND ENCOURAGE OTHERS TO DO LIKEWISE.

John Gilmour
Honorary Secretary
On behalf of the RMGC Council

Royal Musselburgh on Top at Belhaven Qualifier - 13/7/10

Royal Musselburgh secured victory in the East Region Final of the 2010 Belhaven Best Captains & Secretaries Championship at West Linton today (Tuesday 13th July).

The partnership of Richard Bush (Captain) and John Gilmour (Secretary) posted a six under par score of 63 to win the regional qualifier by one-shot from runners-up Dunbar Castle’s Nigel Bower & Ian Jevons.
In beautiful conditions at West Linton the North Berwick pairing of Christopher Spence and Peter Keely on 65 took third place and the final prize position, on the better inward half from fourth-placed qualifiers Duddingston.  The four remaining Clubs to qualify for the Grand Final were Murrayfield and Baberton who both scored a superb 66, Cardrona who finished on 67 and Ratho Park whose best last six holes of 21 was good enough to fend off eight further clubs who carded a one-under par 68.

Winning partnership Bush & Gilmour who have a handicap of eight and fifteen respectively began their round on the 12th hole in today’s ‘shot-gun start’ format. Despite starting slowly with a bogey on their opening hole the Royal Musselburgh pair were in outstanding form and fired seven birdies and an eagle on their way to victory. The team used their shots to great effect, making only one ‘natural birdie’ in a master-class of team handicap golf.

Winning Secretary John Gilmour commented that both players contributed equally to the victory:
“We gelled really well as a team, we both played well but had our individual best moments at different holes which is what it is all about playing a better-ball format. Without holing any particularly long putts we both putted solidly and holed out every time from inside five feet”

Like many fellow competitors Captain Richard Bush heaped praise on host course West Linton:
“The course was superb, I’d heard a lot of good stories about it but this was my first time trying it myself and it certainly didn’t fall short of expectations. We are both delighted to have won and are very much looking forward to the Grand Final!”

The Belhaven Best sponsored mixed event for Club Captains and Secretaries is now in its fifth season and has quickly become one of the most popular events amongst SGU affiliated clubs.  The fifth and final Regional Final will take place at Cathcart Castle on Tuesday 17th August with the Grand Final taking place at Murrayshall on Tuesday 21st September.
