June 2011 – Newsletter

Club Championship FinalsThe torrential rain last Tuesday caused some disruption to the schedule for Finals week but otherwise the weather was fairly kind. I am grateful to all affected by the disruption for their tolerance and understanding. My congratulations to all the players who fought their way through to Finals day on Saturday.

Craig Johnstone is a worthy champion whose good form during the week culminated in a sparkling display in the Final. He was 5 under par for the first 18 holes.

The B Championship final went all the way to the 36th with John Russell coming out ahead of John H Russell. Announcing the score at each hole in this match was a nightmare!

The Senior Championship was won narrowly by Chester Kruk, the man who kindly donated the trophy for this competition several years ago.

The final of the Junior Championship was a high quality match with both players being 2 under par to the turn. Stuart Blair was 3 under when winning 2 and 1.

The Ladies Championship was won by Pam Hall with Helen Findlay emerging victorious in the Bronze Plate.

The course was presented in excellent condition. Many thanks to the Head Greenkeeper and his staff for this. Thanks also to the catering and bar staff and to my fellow Council members for all their hard work throughout a long but very enjoyable week.

County Cup

Our A team did the Royal Musselburgh proud with a great run in the County Cup at Muirfield, They claimed the scalps of Whitekirk, Kilspindie and  Musselburgh before losing to Gullane in the semi-final. The deciding match of a thrilling encounter went to the 20th hole.

Trophy Presentation Evening

March seems a long time ago now but it was a very enjoyable evening. Photos of the winners in attendance with their trophies are available. A set of proofs are in an envelope behind the Bar. Please leave a note of the number and size of the photos you want and we will order the prints for you.

RMGC Open Competitions

The Gents Seniors (7 July), the Willie Park Putter (6 August), the Junior Open (9 August) and the Scottish Hickory Open (27 and 28 August) are fast approaching. There has also been a steady flow of entries for the Mixed Open on 10 September. Entry forms are available in the Pro shop or can be down-loaded from our website. All entries should be accompanied by the appropriate entry fee.

Competition Booking and Registration

The Council decided to defer using the new computer-based booking system for RMGC competitions until members had time to become familiar with it when booking for general play. We intend to use the new system before the end of the season so that all golf will be booked online either in the shop or clubhouse or remotely via the website.

The Council would welcome views on whether a proportion of times should be made available for booking remotely from, say, 7.30pm on the Friday evening when booking opens. This would mean that people attending in person for 6.30 would still have priority but others could book without having to travel to the clubhouse. The Council would also welcome views on whether the system of reserved times only bookable on the day of a competition could be dispensed with.

New Scorecards and Local Rules

A new supply of scorecards is being printed. We have taken the opportunity to make some changes to the design and wording of the cards. In particular, the Local Rules have been up-dated so please take a few minutes to read them through. It is in your own interest to be familiar with them.

Call for Volunteers

In the April newsletter, I invited members to offer their services to the Council with the running of Open and Club competitions, handicapping etc. We are very grateful for the encouraging response we have received. We would like to establish a Panel of Volunteers whom we can contact if and when we are at full stretch. So if you are interested, please get in touch. You don’t need to be an expert in running a golf club – just willing to devote a couple of hours or so to lend a hand.

Arthur Reid,

Captain

Remember – slow play frustrates everyone behind you.

Club Championship Trophy

Arthur, Duke of Connaught, was the third son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. He was Honorary President of the Club from 1876 until 1942.

In 1897, the year of Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee, he presented a silver cup to be awarded to the winner of an 18 holes scratch competition in which the eight players with the lowest score were to play off by holes.

Since 1951 the winner of the Connaught Cup has been designated the Club Champion.

The B Division Champion receives the Coronation Cup. Presented by the then Captain in 1953, the year of Queen Elizabeth’s Coronation, it is played for in a knockout competition by the sixteen lowest scratch score qualifiers following the B Division Spring Meeting.
